Home to 25 volcanoes, 14 lakes, and a population of over 6 million, El Salvador is the smallest Central American country. Although tiny, the country has so much to offer the adventure traveler. A well-maintained national park is located in the west at Bosque El Imposible. And Montecristo Cloud Forest, as well as a quaint fishing village with incredible local hospitality and remote coconut islands can be found at La Isla de Méndez. Isla de Olomega is in the department of San Miguel and is an excellent eco-tourism destination. In addition, the colonial towns of Apaneca, Panchimalco, and Suchitoto are worth visiting. Not to mention the amazing Mayan sites  of San Andrés, Joya de Cerén, and Tazumal, whose predominant temple reaches 33m into the sky. The on-site museum exhibits artifacts from the Pipil culture, and paintings that illustrate life in pre-Hispanic El Salvador.

Joya de Cerén an UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered the Pompeii of Central America with Laguna Caldera looming in the background. The Mayan city was buried under an eruption of the Laguna Caldera volcano c. AD 600. Because of the exceptional condition of the remains, they provide an insight into the daily lives of the Mesoamerican populations who worked the land at that time.
